Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention from scientists and engineers. Their small size and perfect structure, give rise to attractive mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Ever since their discovery, a great deal of effort has been put into the characterization of CNT properties. Various approaches have been used to this end, ranging from computationally expensive ab-initio and semi-empirical methods to continuum models and experimental observations. Continuum models are computationally efficient for the investigation of large systems. However, at the nano-scale, quantum effects become significant, making the applicability of classical continuum mechanics questionable. It has been reported that non-local elasticity can capture the basic features of nano-scale effects in CNTs. Non-local continuum models have been used to study CNT vibrations, buckling of CNTs under axial and radial loads, and propagation of waves in CNTs. In this study, we develop a non-local thin-shell model to investigate the torsional buckling of CNTs. We perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to determine the value of the non-local parameter of the continuum model. Results from MD simulations, the non-local thin-shell model and classical shell theory are compared for zigzag and armchair nanotubes.

Dr. Nimal Rajapakse is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Civil Engineering from the University of Sri Lanka in 1977, and masters and doctoral degrees in Structural Engineering and Mechanics from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 1985, became the Head of the Department in 1997 and moved to the UBC in 2000 as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Rajapakse’s research interests are in Applied Mechanics, with particular emphasis on the Mechanics of Advanced Materials. He received the Horst Leipholz Medal in recognition of outstanding research in Engineering Mechanics; the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC; the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship; the Rh Award for Outstanding Research in Applied Sciences; and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Visiting Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He serves on the editorial board of five international Journals.
