报告内容摘要:
Blindness is considered as the most sever disability to the human being. There is more than 45million blind people worldwide, and about 5.5 million in China. Retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are the major cause of untreatable blindness. Visual Prosthesis is an implantable device that is capable of processing and coding the acquired image into micro-stimulating pulses which act onto the micro-electrode array placed in the visual passway to form a visual perception in the brain. Recently, a new type of visual prosthesis based on optic nerve stimulation with penetrating electrode array is developed by our group. In this presentation, we will describe the overall design principle, the technological development, and the experimental studies of the device. The key issues and future challenges of visual prosthesis for blindness will also be discussed.

报告人简历:
Prof. Qiushi Ren was graduated from Hua-Zhong Unviersity of Science and Technology , Wuhan, China with Bachelor degree in Optical Engineering in June, 1984.  From September, 1985 to December, 1990, he studied at the Department of Electrical Engineering majoring Solid State Electronics and received Master Degree in March, 1987, and Ph.D. Degree in December, 1990, respectively. After received his Ph.D. degree,  Dr. Qiushi Ren became the faculty of Department of Biomedical Engineering as an assistant professor,  with adjunct appointment at Department of Ophthalmology and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of University Miami, Miami, Florida in January, 1991, where he was working on innovative laser therapies for ophthalmic application. In January, 1995, he jointed the faculty  of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of California, Irvine, where he was working on excimer laser refractive surgery and new laser therapies in ophthalmology. In July, 2002,  Prof. Ren joined the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and found the Institute in Laser Medicine and Bio-Photonics. Prof. Ren received ¥29 million funding support as Chief Scientist from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China for National Key Basic Research Project (973 Project) Entitled: Basic Research on Visual Function Recovery for Blindness and Its Related Key Technologies in July, 2005, a grand for Distinguished Young Scholars from The National Natural Science Foundation of China in January, 2006. He was appointed as Chang-Jiang Distinguished Professor by the Chinese Ministry of Education in March, 2007. Prof. Qiushi Ren’s current research interests are focused on research and development of Visual Prosthesis Based on Optic Nerve Stimulation with Penetrating Electrode Array, minimal invasive laser therapies, and medical instrumentation.  Prof. Ren has published over 50 SCI-indexed journal papers, received 1 US patents, co-edited three proceeding books.
