     Science and technology in the 21st century will heavily rely on smart functional materials that can manifest the desired functional properties in response to environmental cues. Such smart functional materials could have a widespread applications ranging from smart plastics to actuating cell culture devices. In our laboratory, we have developed a number of novel smart materials, including materials that can undergo rapid self-healing and multi-functional synthetic matrices that can provide dynamic multiple cues to the cells mimicking the in vivo tissue-like environment more closely. In this talk, I will describe the development of such smart, biomimetic materials and their potential applications. First, I will talk about healing of chemically crosslinked hydrogels where the healing is achieved through secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Next, I will talk about electro-chemo-mechanical matrices that exhibit the ability to simultaneously provide multiple dynamic mechanical, electrical, and chemical cues to encapsulated stem cells. Finally, I will talk about oscillating hydrogels for promoting osteogenic differentiation of stem cells.
