报告内容摘要
The objective of my research is to design, fabricate, and evaluate novel biomaterials through interdisciplinary approaches for repairing or replacing diseased or injured hard and soft tissues (e.g. bone, ligament, cartilage, etc.), and eventually restoring the associated biological and biomechanical functions. The research of such scope demands bridging new discoveries in nanotechnology, tissue engineering, and controlled drug delivery with current concepts in materials science, chemistry, biology, and medicine to closely mimic natural tissues in terms of their surface, chemistry, highly ordered nano-to-macro hierarchical structures, and associated physiological properties. First, this presentation will highlight recent advances in skeletal tissue regeneration through the use of nanocomposites. Specifically, nanophase ceramic/polymer composites were designed and fabricated into 2D and 3D structures to closely mimic properties of natural bone. Results showed that osteoblast (bone-forming cell) functions were enhanced the most by the nanocomposites with the closest nano-surface characteristics to bone, which were tailored by controlling the dispersion of ceramic nanoparticles in the polymer. Second, this presentation will briefly discuss recent studies on the design and process of novel resorbable metals (i.e. magnesium alloys) for the regeneration of ligament and ligament/bone interface through the integration of engineered Mg-based devices into the healing process. Lastly, the importance of multidisciplinary partnership in translating novel biomaterials into clinical effective products will be discussed.
