Abstract. Impact experiments are conducted to investigate the interaction of a single dynamic crack with a perpendicular interface in a glass sheet. A foam projectile impacts on a notched glass sheet having an interface normal to the impact axis. A single crack initiates by the dynamic impact loading and propagates into the interface. Experimental results show that behavior of the crack/interface interaction depends on the interfacial properties. The crack stops if the interface has no adhesive. The crack passes through the interface if it has a very thin layer of adhesive. The crack branches into multiple cracks if the interface has a layer of adhesive with a finite thickness. The crack is arrested at the interface if the glass surface across the adhesive layer has a high quality. Peridynamics is used to model the impact event and numerically simulate the crack interaction with the interface.
