The report is about Professor Zhao's recent studies about stimuli-responsive polymers. Three types of stimuli, namely, light, ultrasound and carbon dioxide (CO2), were explored. In the first study, we investigated a new solution to the problem of requiring UV or visible light for many photosensitive polymers developed for biomedical applications. By loading lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in photosensitive block copolymer (BCP) micelles or hydrogels, we found that upon excitation of continuous-wave near-infrared (NIR) light at 980 nm from a diode laser, UV or visible light emitted from UCNPs could activate the photoreaction and lead to disassembly of BCP micelles or dissociation of hydrogels. In the second study, we investigated the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as a trigger for spatial and temporal control of shape–memory polymers in aqueous solution. We found that due to a localized heating effect upon HIFU exposure and fast dissipation of heat by turning off HIFU, the shape recover process could be activated on-demand in selected regions and multiple intermediate shapes could be obtained. In the third study, by applying our recently proposed method of preparing CO2-switchable polymers based on gas-tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST), we designed and investigated BCP vesicles undergoing either irreversible CO2-triggered dissociation or reversible expansion-contraction, as well as ABA triblock copolymer hydrogels that could undergo CO2-induced gel-sol or reversed sol-gel transition.

赵越教授1982年获成都科技大学工学学士学位;同年考上出国研究生,1987年获巴黎大学博士学位;1987年至1990年底在加拿大Laval大学作博士后;1991年起在加拿大Sherbrooke大学化学系任教,2000年起任该大学全职教授。
赵越教授主要从事功能高分子材料和液晶材料的设计、合成、基础理论和器件应用的开发研究。在众多的成果中,赵越教授提出利用偶氮苯聚合物网络可以实现光控制液晶小分子取向;设计的自组装液晶凝胶有各种功能,如散射型光电开关和电控制的光致发光;研制的衍射光栅材料可通过机械变形,电场或光进行调节;建立了制备光控聚合物胶束、囊泡、纳米和微凝胶的通用设计原理,这项创新性研究成果打开了光活性高分子纳米载体在可控释放方面应用的大门。 研究论文大多发表在高影响学术刊物,许多研究新思想和提出的新概念对他所在的研究领域产生重大的影响。 截止2012年,共发表论文140篇, 他引用 2200多次。2008年应John Wiley & Sons公司出版社邀请出版了关于偶氮苯聚合物和液晶高分子材料的专著“Smart Light-Responsive Materials: Azobenzene-Containing Polymers and Liquid Crystals”。2006年,赵越教授获Sherbrooke大学“University Leader”称号,。作110邀请报告包括多次国际学术会议。担任 第33届加拿大高分子科学会议大会(2007年)的主席;2007-2010年是高分子材料工程国家重点实验室、四川大学讲座教授。此外,赵越教授还是英国Reading大学、美国麻省大学和日本东京工业大学的访问教授,上海交通大学兼职教授。
