报告内容摘要

Mg-based alloys are biodegradable alloys. They have advantages over permanent implant materials in terms of eliminating follow-up surgeries to remove the fixation devices/implants after the injury is healed, promoting tissue re-growth as the implant is degrading, and so on. However, biocompatibility is strictly required to these alloys to be placed in human or animal bodies. In order to make fully biocompatible Mg-based alloys, utilization of none-toxic elements is not enough. Their bio-degradation rates must be in controlled rates to limit Mg++ concentration in blood within certain level and to limit the gas release rate. Beyond that, Mg-based alloys are required to possess desirable mechanical and degradation properties. The profile of mechanical property of an implant is required to match the tissue healing progress during the degradation of the implant.  These are the most fundamental motivations for a bio-materials research to develop novel fully biocompatible Mg-based alloys with a wide spectrum of mechanical and degradation properties to meet the needs of different applications. This presentation will offer a survey of different methods of how to improve the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg-based alloys.
