报告内容摘要:

Fluorescent nanodiamonds are becoming increasingly important in application of bio-labeling and bio-imaging. This stems primarily from their unprecedented bio-compatibility and the ability to host bright fluorescent color centers.

In this talk, I will first give a brief introduction into the field of fluorescent nanodiamonds and in particular the generation of luminescent defects. In particular, I will focus on two interesting candidates – the silicon vacancy and the nitrogen vacancy color centers. I will describe how these centers are fabricated and highlight the potential applications of them for bio-labeling and bio-imaging. In addition, I will highlight the importance of surface modification and show how conjugation of nanodiamonds with several bio-molecules can be harnessed to increase fluorescence from the nanodiamonds. Finally, I will present some interesting new results on other platforms for cell-imaging. These will include silicon carbide quantum dots and other nanostructured materials.

Igor Aharonovich received his B.Sc (2005) and M.Sc (2007) in Materials Engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. He then moved to Australia and pursued his PhD studies at the University of Melbourne on the topic of single emitters in diamond. In 2011, Igor took a postdoctoral position at Harvard University at the group of Prof Evelyn Hu. His research was focused on nanofabrication of optical cavities out of diamond, silicon carbide and gallium nitride.

In 2013 Igor has joined the School of Physics and Advanced Materials as a Senior Lecturer and an ARC DECRA fellow and was promoted to an Associated Professor in 2015. He is currently leading the Nanophotonics group, focusing on single defects in wide bandgap semiconductors and their implementation in quantum technologies and bio-medical applications.

Igor received several international awards and recognitions, including an invitation from the Royal Society to participate in the first Commonwealth Conference in India (2014), Geoff Opat ECR prize (2013) from the optical society of Australia, Harvard Postdoctoral Award for Professional Development (2012), SPIE Research Excellence Award (2010) and Sigma Xi Research grant (2009). He published more than 70 peer reviewed papers, edited one book and has an h index of 17 (Google scholar).
