题目Topology-mediated optical and electro-optical properties of chiral nematic systems

报告人Prof. CHIEN, LIANG-CHY

Abstract: We demonstrate electrical and photo control of the transmittance of the self-assembled bubble domain (BD) texture of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy confined into a cell with homeotropic surface anchoring. By using a photosensitive chiral dopant with variable helical twisting power under light irradiation, control of packing density of bubbles, spatial patterning, as well as all-optical switching between bistable states with different optical densities is achieved By introducing dichroic dye into the CLC mixture, a bistable and switchable by applied electric field guest-host system is obtained. The light dimming properties of dye-doped BD CLC systems may lead to development of a wide range of applications.

题目Topology-mediated flexoelectro-optical behavior of chiral nematic systems

Abstract: We explore flexoelectro-optic effect in polymer stabilized uniform lying helix cholesteric liquid crystal texture samples. A method to enlarge the flexoelectric response of CLC mixture is demonstrated by mixing two LC host materials with larger and smaller effective flexoelastic coefficients. By optimization of material composition of CLC mixture a large angle of flexoelectrically driven in-plane rotation of helical axis with a submillisecond response time are obtained. Our findings will be useful for material design of future CLC mixtures for applications in flexoelectrooptic displays.
