Abstract:
Bent-core nematic (BCN) is one kind of promising liquid crystals (LCs) for provide new electro-optical functional capabilities, as its peculiar V-shaped molecular structure gives rise to unusual electric transport and optic properties. BCNs possess the attributions of both crystals and liquids, and undergo various deformations and convections under the effect of electric- or optic fields, self-assembling specific patterns. As these complex nonlinear structures are distinct characteristics for LCs as ordered and fluid systems, thus we could understand the physical properties and underlying mechanisms by investigation these nonlinear effects. For the electric-induced patterns, flexodmains and electroconvection domains are demonstrated, depending on the electric transport properties arising from molecular structures; as for the optic field-induced patterns, this effect could be enhanced significantly by introduction with photo-sensitive dopants. By means of exploring patterns in BCNs, we could establish drive-response model, which is the basis for application.
