内容简介:
The overall goal of the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) is to promote the development and application of science, engineering, and medicine internationally. In April 2014, the BISO Board has revised and boardened its mission. The (new) mission of BISO is to strengthen science for the benefit of society through U.S. leadership, collaboration, and representation in international scientific organizations and initiatives. Note that the US National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) was established in the 40's as a member of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and IUTAM is a member of BISO. At that time, Mechanics was the “Emperor” representing engineering. Time evolves, many branches of engineering have emerged. At the present time, the word mechanics is respected in Europe and in Asia but not in the US. It could have been all the destructive personalities in the field in days gone by, and their very limited vision of where mechanics was going (e.g., computation, bio, nano, manufacturing, infrastructures, natural and man-made disasters, homeland securities, water resources, weather predictions, among many other fields). Most people do not realize how important mechanics is to everything. Something needs to be done or the committee will not receive support and will cease to exist. With the Committee member’s support, we have revised the new vision and mission of the Committee given below.
“The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) represents the United States in national and international activities related to the broad science of mechanics, including related sciences, engineering and mathematics. It serves as a focal point for charting future priorities in mechanics related research, applications and education. It represents the United States in the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM).”
In this town hall meeting style seminar, we will discuss the future of Mechanics in China and their interaction with the rest of the world as well as undergraduate and graduate students about Academic Career Development.

Professor Wing Kam Liu is the Walter P. Murphy Professor of Northwestern University, President of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM), Past Chair (2017-2018) (Chair 2015-2016) of the USNC/TAM and a BISO Member, both USNC/TAM and BISO are under the umbrella of the US National Academies. He received Ph.D. and M.S. from Caltech, and B.S. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Liu’s selected honors include Japan Society of Computational Engineering Sciences Grand Prize; Computational Mechanics Award from Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers; Honorary Professorship from Dalian University of Technology, IACM Gauss-Newton Medal (highest honor) and Computational Mechanics Award; ASME Dedicated Service Award, ASME Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award, ASME Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award, ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal and ASME Melville Medal; John von Neumann Medal and Computational Structural Mechanics Award from the US Association of Computational Mechanics (USACM). Selected synergistic activities includes the development of ICME multiscale theories, methods, and software for the design and analysis of engineering material systems, materials design, additive manufacturing, and technology transfer through working with multiple major Corporations. He was the founding Director of the NSF Summer Institute on Nano Mechanics and Materials and Founding Chair of the ASME NanoEngineering Council. He is the editor of two International Journals and honorary editor of two journals and has been a consultant for more than 20 organizations. Liu has written four books; and he is a Fellow of ASME, ASCE, USACM, AAM, and IACM.
