Variational Multiscale Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics: Interfacial Stabilization and Turbulence Modeling

报告内容摘要:


This talk addresses the significant challenges in fluid mechanics simulation through a robust computational framework—the Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) method. The method is based on the fine-scale variational structure facilitated by the VMS framework where fine scales are driven by the residuals of the Euler–Lagrange equations of the resolved scales in the target partial differential equations (PDEs). We first delineate the basic procedures by applying the VMS method onto the advection equation. Next, we present a variationally consistent method for deriving residual-based closure models for incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, while the numerical instabilities arising from such advection-dominant saddle point problem are also resolved. Finally, this talk introduces a robust numerical method for the class of coupled systems comprised of multiple interacting PDEs. In the context of the immiscible two-phase fluids, applying the VMS method to the coupled system results in an interface stabilization term. In the context of incompressible flows with density stratification, the fine-scale turbulence features are accounted for by the VMS strategy, wherein the hierarchical application of VMS results in a new turbulence model。

 

报告人简历:


2012年于同济大学获土木工程专业学士学位;2013年于美国伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校(UIUC)获结构工程硕士学位,2019年于美国伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校获计算科学与工程博士学位。2020年初进入中国科学院力学研究所任特别研究助理(博士后)。研究方向:计算力学,两相流,湍流大涡模拟,流固声耦合、有限单元法。
